In 1943, with Italy still at war alongside Nazi Germany, Sardinia and Cagliari became an important strategic target for the Allied air force.

Due to the very serious material and especially human losses endured, on 12 May 1950 the President of the Republic Luigi Einaudi awarded the city with the gold medal for military value.

Even today, by watching the few films of that time, the scenario of death and devastation caused by the bombing of familiar and dear places appears unreal.

On May 13, two raids, one in the afternoon and one at night, caused immense devastation in the almost deserted town.

Neither civilian homes nor places of worship were spared.

In the central Giuseppe Manno Street, the seventeenth-century church of Saints George and Catherine, named after the members of the Archconfraternity of the Genoese, patrons of their hometown, was completely destroyed by the bombs.

The epigraph placed in memory of that sacred place reads:

HERE RISED THE DEDICATED CHURCH TO SS. MM. GIORGIO AND CATERINA WHICH THE NATIONALS GENOESE BUILT IN THE XVI CENTURY AND WAS DESTROYED BY CRUENT AERIAL BOMBING ON 13-5-1943

Santa Gilla lagoon is located on the south west coast of the island, in the territories of Cagliari, Elmas, Assemini and Capoterra. La Vetreria cultural centre is an architectural structure in Campidanese style, located inside the Ex Vetreria park.

The complex covers an area formerly occupied by a glass factory and represents a good example of industrial architecture recovery.

Along the sides of the central courtyard there are the Teatro La Vetreria and the School of Scenic Arts of the theatre company Cada Die Teatro; a centre for active education, a school of music and a café/ludospazio, the Caffé ludico, managed by Cemea Sardegna cooperative; the Fucina teatrale where the theatrical performances of the company il Crogiuolo are played; a music recording studio and a room used for early childhood services.

Poetto’s beach can be reached within 10 minutes by car or bus, but many other beautiful beaches out of town are easily reached by public transport

Classic pentagonal bastion, the rampart of Monserrato was built in 1562 by the engineer Rocco Cappellino, in order to protect the eastern side of Marina district. Originally dedicated to St. James, he changed name after 1604, when the Benedictines of Montserrat built their convent near it. In the period from 1756 to 1813, when part of it was used as a cemetery for the military hospital nearby, it was also known as Bastion of the Dead.

The resignation due to the Royal Decree of 1867, opened the way for the assignment to private and to the change of use of the ancient defensive garrison.

In 1869, a freshwater establishment was installed, a part of which, a little later, was transformed into a Hotel.

“The Iron Staircase” (that was the name of the accommodation) only kept from the Bastion the five sides plan of the original building; built in neo-Gothic style, it was characterized by two towers in the facade with false battlements, trap doors and windows.

Renowned for luxury rooms and a garden decorated with antiques and works of art, the hotel hosted distinguished visitors such as the English writer David Herbert Lawrence and the Italian actor Antonio De Curtis, better known as Totò.

Currently, after further revisions, which have significantly reduced the neo-Gothic features dating from the late nineteenth century, the palace houses the offices of the Prefecture.

During the restoration works, some excavations have unearthed sepulchral remains, cremation tombs and sarcophagi, dated back to the period between the end of the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, belonging to the East necropolis of the ancient Karales, that today represents a small but suggestive archaeological area.
