The 23 anatomical models were moulded in19th century by the famous Florentine wax modeller Clemente Susini. The waxes hold the sculptor signature and are placed on catalogued wooden boards and completed with captions.

The collection consists of a series of authentic anatomical reproductions made by the sculptor Clemente Susini, between 1803 and 1805, at the museum's laboratory of the Florence Observatory. The waxes were brought in Cagliari in 1805 and they were purchased by the Viceroy Carlo Felice, in order to expose them at the Antiquity and Natural History Museum. The collection was brought in 1923, at the Anatomical Institute, and in 1991 they arrived at the Pentagon Hall of Cittadella dei Musei, their present location. These waxes, have been performed in dissections by Professor Francesco Boi. They offer a detailed representation of the human body and an interesting documentation of the medical knowledge of that time. These waxes bear the sculptor signature and are placed on wooden planks. During the transfer into their present location, they were all cataloged and captioned.

Villanova district

Descrizione

The Villanova district, at east from Castello, was once inhabited by farmers, who worked on the vast fields and vineyards that surrounded the area. Even today the houses in the neighbourhood are generally humbler and with a lower development in height compared to the buildings of the other historic districts. During the Holy Week the streets of the district come alive with Cagliari and tourists who attend the various processions, organized by the archconfraternities of Solitude and the Most Holy Crucifix, which have their oratories in Villanova. From the expansion of Villanova, the modern districts of the east of Cagliari were formed.

Descrizione

The Stampace district, built to the west of Castello to accommodate the refugees of Santa Igia, was the neighbourhood formerly characterized by numerous workshops of artisans and artists. It has always been linked to Saint Ephisius and the May celebrations, due to the presence of the church, built according to tradition above the saint's prison. In the district there are also the important baroque churches of Saint Michele and Saint Anna.
From the expansion of Stampace, the modern districts of the western area of Cagliari gradually formed.

Sant'Avendrace district

Descrizione

The district of Sant'Avendrace was formerly isolated from the rest of the city and it was known by the name of Borgo di Sant'Avendrace. It rises not far from the pond of Santa Gilla and it is crossed by the important and busy Sant'Avendrace Avenue, from which it is possible to observe the Cave of the Viper, a sepulchre from the Roman era. The avenue still overlooks some of the low houses that were once home to the fishermen of the nearby lagoon, the only inhabitants of the place in the past.
The Sant'Avendrace Avenue ends in the homonymous square, from which Elmas Avenue and Monastir Avenue begin, that are respectively the initial sections of the SS 130 and the SS 131. From Sant'Avendrace Square also begins the San Michele Street in which it is located Villa Carboni, built in the seventeenth century on the ruins of a Roman Domus of which traces remain evident.

Sant'Alenixedda district

Descrizione

The Sant'Alenixedda district is between Giovanni XXIII Square, Ottone Bacaredda Street and Marconi Avenue. It takes its name from the homonymous street where the Lyric Theater of Cagliari and the "Pierluigi da Palestrina" Music Conservatory with the adjacent Auditorium are located. Although it is among the most populated neighbourhoods in the city, it has an uneven and not very compact appearance; in fact, to designate the area the denomination "Sant'Alenixedda" is used very rarely by its inhabitants who rather claim to belong to the adjacent neighbourhoods San Benedetto or Fonsarda.

San Benedetto district

Quartiere San Benedetto
Categoria/Sottocategoria

Descrizione

The San Benedetto district was built in the 1930s when the first edifices were erected near the main square which gave life to the original housing complex.
Twenty years later, due to the massive demand for new homes by citizens who had lost theirs during the war, the neighbourhood was the protagonist, together with other districts of the same city, of a rapid building expansion that saw it grow and occupy areas that until then were entirely peripheral. The construction of the palaces was completed in a few years and San Benedetto assumed, on the map of Cagliari, the current polygonal shape, with the center in the homonymous square and vertices corresponding to other central points of the city, the squares: Repubblica, Garibaldi and Dante (later dedicated to Pope John XXIII from Palestrina).
