Collection of Sardinian art and handicrafts, featuring paintings, maps, traditional clothing, carpets, rosaries, jewellery and silverware.

The Collection is housed on the ground floor of the building that previously housed the Tridentine Seminary. The palace was built by the military Count Saverio Belgrano Famolasco during the 17th century. The collection consists of about 900 pieces, and was donated to the University in 1980 by Dr. Luigi Piloni Bogliolo dell'Arme. After the works were completed by the architect De Plano, it was inaugurated in November 1984.

Piloni, our illustrious countryman, created the collection not only thanks to its economic resources, but also through his good taste, deep culture and a little 'luck', which have been essentials during his life in order to find on the market unique artworks, and unique and valuable collections.

Except for the entrance hall, the exhibition encompasses six rooms in which are exhibited some prints of art, history and culture of Sardinian famous people. Then, on a display case there are some publications donated by Piloni.

In the first room, dedicated to the religious iconography, there are two major findings of the collection, two parts of the altarpiece dating back to the 1500's. One, is a table of Michele Cavaro, illustrating Santa Chiara, from the altarpiece of the Madonna of Bonaria, and the other is of Antiochus Mainas depicting the Deposition of Christ, from the altarpiece of the Council House of Oristano.

In the second room there are 32 original paintings of Philippine della Marmora, nephew of the General Alberto Ferrero della Marmora. These pieces, that provide an overview of Sardinian locations, hold a high documentary value if not artistic, dating back to the period 1852-1860.

In the third room there are 1900s works of most famous Sardinian painters and artists, featured in oil paintings, watercolors, paints ( A. Ballero, G. Biasi, C. Cabras, S. Dessy, M. Sironi, F. Figari, F. Melis Marini, M. Delitala, C. Floris, G. Ciusa Romagna, T. Scano, A. Sassu ), as well as some other foreign artists, among which R. Locatelli and G. Sciuti.

In the fourth room there are jewels of traditional Sardinian silverware, considered "clothing" and including: rosaries of 18th-19th century, necklaces, pendants, reliquaries, spuligadentes, ganceras, buttons and charms.

In the fifth room there are more than two hundred island views, including lithographs, watercolors, paints and inks, some of which are uncommon and authentic.

In the sixth room, the largest, which is located on the left side of the entrance and used as auditorium during the Tridentine Seminary, we can admire: forty elaborate textiles named bertulas and originating from Campidano, strips called "coberi bancu " and "coberi cascia", a bedspread and three carpets, one from Oristano with a particularity "sa mustra". There are also artifacts dating back to 1700s, 1800s and ( as two rare " tapinu de mortu " ) 1900s.

The hall houses a series of traditional costumes prints, 25 lithographs of Pittaluga, 10 chromolithographs of Enrico Costa, 43 color prints of Dalsani (G. Ansaldi ), 13 lithographs of Martinelli, 49 lithographs of Baldassarre.
There is also a fine collection of over one hundred maps and pilot books, including some handwritten, dating back from Tolomeo copies to 1939, with the folk tourist map of V. Nicouline published by De Agostini.

The Ethnographic Museum is a huge collection of refined Sardinian handicrafts. It is featured by an exhibition of textiles, jewels, furniture, utensils and carvings, dating back to the second half of 19th century and the first half of the 20th .
All items were collected by the Sardinian magistrate and collector Luigi Cocco (1883 – 1959).

The 731 pieces of the textile collection come from central and southern Sardinia and belong to the traditional horizontal loom: blankets, chest covers, table covers, cushion covers, bed ornaments, ornamental strips, tablecloths, towels, pot holders, saddle bags, animal collars.

The collection also includes many jewels: 1266, mainly in silver. Although their origin and history is attested only in very few cases, they documented the major types of Sardinian popular tradition in clothing and accessories for women. These ornaments had also a strong symbolic value and a social differentiation, even in the case of magic protection amulets.

Among artifacts and home decors, wooden crates have a considerable importance, large in size (Kascia or arka) and small (kascitta or kascioneddu), and they are highlight in any ethnographic collection in the island. They belong to the barbaric category and they are in chestnut wood and they have hinged lid. They are formed by wooden carvings with geometric, zoomorphic and phytomorphic decorations.

All the sculptures by Costantino Nivola manifest the deep roots in the millenary culture of Sardinia. His works are present in museums and galleries around the world, from the USA to the various municipalities of his homeland. In Cagliari we can admire those present around the building of the Region, of which he also signed the urban plan.

The art of Nivola originates from traditional materials that he learned to work in Sardinia and materializes in the USA, where the major representatives of the current artistic currents dwell.

His sculptures recall those of primitive civilization and take up their original substantial form and attention to the passionate expressiveness of the material. Another important feature of Nivola's sculptures is the desire to bring them into harmony and communication with the surrounding space and make everything as universal as possible.

The Sant'Eulalia underground archaeological complex covers around 900 mt2, and lies in the heart of the Marina district, an ancient medieval quarter in the east of the ancient city of Cagliari.

The site is one of the main urban archaeological areas open to the public in Sardinia, and comprises a large space beneath the parish church of Sant'Eulalia, as well as important items visibile in the nearby church of Santo Sepolcro. Twenty years of almost uninterrupted excavations and research have opened up the past lives of this district near Cagliari's port, and shed light on the entire city's urban history from Roman times to the present day.

A visit to the remains involves journeyng forward and backward in time, and to best illustrate different phases of 2 millennial of history, selected items from the vast quantity of objects discovered during archaeological research are displayed nearby.

The Diocesan Historic Archive has an extension of 1000 m², divided into 5 different sections, independent but complementary: conference room, management office, laboratories, storages and study halls. The most ancient and undated preserved scroll has been dated between 1114 and 1120. Together with other scrolls, known as "Vulgar Papers", it comes from the suppressed Suelli Diocese.

The documentation concerning the Archidiocese is successive to the XV century. In that period the Archive underwent a big fire which caused considerable depletions. The "Vulgar Papers" are in any case the most preserved ancient documents in the Archive of Sardinia.

Until 1980 the Archive was situated in small rooms at the ground floor of the episcopal palace: in the autumn of the same year it was moved to the rooms of the Diocesan seminary, where currently stays. Inside are preserved 450 scrolls ( from the XII to the XX century) and 4432 units from the XIV century to 1988, with documents in copy from 1070.

The State Archives of Cagliari are an associated organisation of the Ministry for Heritage and Cultural Activities and are dependent on the Archives General Management. Here there are a considerable number of documents that have been produced by state offices from the Middle Ages until the second half of the 20th century.

There are also notary deeds prior to the last hundred years, the archives of the public and ecclesiastical bodies, the archives and the documents acquired by purchase agreement, deposit, donation and inheritance in the form of volumes, envelopes,  cards, parchments, maps, registers, etc. This amount of documents is expected to grow periodically by receiving from the state offices the 40 years old documents.

The State Archives have also the task of ordering, inventorying and enhancing documentary sources through research tools such as guides, inventories, registers, lists, which are provided to users to make the consultation possible.

The Archives also carry out promotion activities, through exhibitions and guided tours as well as educational workshops, with the activation of professional courses through the School of Archives, Paleography and Diplomatic.
