Chiesa di San Michele

Church of Saint Michele

St. Michele's church was built over St. Michele's and St. Egidio's oratory, at the end of 17th century, as headquarters of the Jesuit order. It is located next to the ancient "House of the Novitiate", where today there is the Military Hospital, and both share the same entrance. Architecture, decorations, sculptures and pictures shielded inside , make the Church one of the most important example of Baroque art in the city.

The inside has an irregular octagonal plan, with four  communicating chapels for each side, and morever, it is very rich in decorations; frescos, plasters, polychrome marbles and sculptures represent  the great part of decors.

A vestry with a rectangular form was built at the end of 18th century, in Rococo style, extremely rich in decors, frescos, pictures, floors and front doors :among them, we can find selected pictures representing " The Rosarium Misteries", and sculptures by the Sardinian artisan Giuseppe Antonio Lonis, representing "The Passion Misteries", which during the Holy Week, are carried around the street.
