Cagliari offers a lot of different cultural possibilities due to its museums, culture centres, exhibition spaces and private art galleries.
At the Citadel of Museums are located: the National Archaeological Museum, a precious shrine collecting countless relics about sardinian history, from prehistoric time to Middle Ages; the National Art Gallery and its ancient retables coming from different sardinian churches; the Siamese Art Museum "Stefano Cardu”, a pieces of art and weapons from the south east of asia collection; the Luigi Cocco Collection - Ethnographic Museum, an exquisite set of textiles, jewels, antiques, wooden carvings and tools; the Anatomical Wax Collection Clemente Susini (temporarily closed) and San Pancrazio exhibition space, available on particular occasions.
The Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, located in the fascinating setting of the Municipal Gardens, houses the Ingrao Art Collection, a precious set of artworks painted between XIX and XX centuries, and more.
The most important culture centres, hosted in buildings formerly used for different purposes and now open back after a thorough restyling, propose very interesting and attractive temporary exhibitions all year long: il Lazzaretto, il Ghetto, Exma, MEM, the Castle of San Michele, the Former Town Hall, la Vetreria, SEARCH (Exhibition Venue of Municipal Historic Archive), the Covered Walkway, Sa Manifattura.
Furthermore, exhibition spaces managed by the University, as MUACC, the Luigi Piloni Sardinian Culture Collection or Botanical Museum and museums related with religious institutions, the Cathedral museum, the Museum of Santuario di Nostra Signora di Bonaria or the Museum of the Treasure of Saint Eulalia.
There's no lack of exhibition spaces managed by foundations, as Fondazione di Sardegna, Fondazione Siotto or Fondazione Bartoli Felter.
There are even some small “gems”, like the Italian Railways Museum or a collection of “riggiole” (neapolitan style painted tiles) known as Contus de Arrejolas, or open galleries about street art, as the San Saturnino open air gallery or the Gallery of Salt.
Private picture galleries are so many, like La Ruota della Fortuna, Spazio 61 or Galleria Esdé, just to name a few.
