The Cagliari airport, the largest on the island, is located in the municipal area of Elmas, a few kilometers from the center of Cagliari.
The structure that houses the Mario Mameli airport was inaugurated in June 2003.
The airport is the hub of a catchment area that is around five hundred thousand inhabitants considering the metropolitan area of Cagliari (from which it can be reached within a few minutes) and the neighboring smaller towns all well connected to the airport. The importance of this airport is evidenced by the fact that it guarantees about fifty percent of the air traffic of the entire island.
The ground floor is dedicated to national and international arrivals. In this area there are some services such as ATMs, bars, and the emergency room. In the baggage reclaim area, there are also baggage assistance offices, the Customs Office and the Guardia di Finanza. The offices of the car rental companies are located outside the terminal, in a dedicated building, near the Multi-storey car park.
On the first floor there are departures equipped with 42 check-in desks, airline ticket offices, a paid luggage wrapping service and various dining options, as well as a wide range of shops. The VIP room, the friendly room, the parapharmacy and the chapel are located in this area. In the area of the quay there are other restaurants and shops.
On the third level there are the offices of state bodies, airlines and handlers, a restaurant and a modern business center with two conference rooms.
